A Pep Talk for Week Two

Hi Writer,

You made it to the second week of NaNoWriMo! It’s so great to see you here.

If you’ve hit your writing goals and are on track with your project, I salute you. Keep up the amazing work.

If you, like me, are behind schedule, I applaud you too. You’re still writing, which means you’re exactly where you need to be. And who doesn’t love a come-from-behind victory? You’re not underperforming, you’re just honoring one of the most beloved story arcs in human history. Well done.

And now Week Two is upon us. This is when stories bloom in beautiful ways, but it’s also when life’s demands can make writing tough.

Which is why I’m sharing a game-changing tool with you today. It’s free. It’s powerful. And it’s a subject I flunked in high school.

The tool, of course, is physics.

Yep. Energy and motion are much more important than inspiration or ideas in the next phase of NaNoWriMo. And when it comes to Week Two, the real secret sauce is momentum.

You’ve likely caught glimpses of the powerful role momentum can play in your project already. When you write regularly, your story crackles with an electricity it didn’t have before. Your worlds become richer. Characters divulge all sorts of juicy secrets. And disconnected plot lines begin braiding themselves together in satisfying ways.

Leveraging momentum feels obvious, but we’re not writing in a vacuum. Work, school, and family have a way of stalling our progress, and our inner editors are always there waving their arms and encouraging us to go back and fix all those typos before someone gets hurt.

This week, if you’re feeling stuck or slow, know that you can fire up the momentum machine by writing a few sentences. Author Rachael Herron talks about this eloquently on our blog.

It sounds too good to be true, but a short session can completely shift the physics of your project. The difference between hopelessness and happiness in NaNoWriMo is often a couple hundred words.

Okay, enough of my blathering. Great things are coming your way this week, writer. Let’s go build some momentum!

Warm, wordy regards,

Chris
